YM vs MYM, and what to know
YM ticks in whole points: one tick is one point and worth $5. That makes the maths easy, but the Dow moves a lot of points, so a 30 point stop is already $150.
The micro, MYM, is $0.50 a point, one tenth of YM.
| Tick value | Per point | 30 point move | |
|---|---|---|---|
| YM | $5.00 | $5.00 | $150.00 |
| MYM | $0.50 | $0.50 | $15.00 |
Turning ticks into a position size
contracts = your risk ÷ risk per contract
Work out the stop first, then the size. Never the other way round. The position size calculator does this for YM and every other contract, and tells you when the micro fits better.
Knowing the tick value is the easy part. The part that costs traders money is what happens after two losers: an extra contract, a wider stop, one more trade. A max size rule you check after every session is what keeps the numbers on this page the numbers you actually trade.
