RTY vs M2K, and what to know
RTY (E-mini Russell 2000) has a smaller tick than the other index futures: 0.10 points, worth $5. A full point is $50, the same as ES.
Ten ticks make a point on RTY, not four. Traders coming from ES or NQ often get their stop maths wrong by exactly that.
The micro, M2K, is $5 a point and $0.50 a tick, one tenth of RTY.
| Tick value | Per point | 5 point move | |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTY | $5.00 | $50.00 | $250.00 |
| M2K | $0.50 | $5.00 | $25.00 |
Turning ticks into a position size
contracts = your risk ÷ risk per contract
Work out the stop first, then the size. Never the other way round. The position size calculator does this for RTY and every other contract, and tells you when the micro fits better.
Knowing the tick value is the easy part. The part that costs traders money is what happens after two losers: an extra contract, a wider stop, one more trade. A max size rule you check after every session is what keeps the numbers on this page the numbers you actually trade.
