MGC vs GC, and what to know

MGC (Micro Gold) is 10 ounces, one tenth of the full GC contract. Every $1 move in the gold price is $10 per MGC.

Gold regularly moves $30 or more in a day, and much more on CPI or FOMC. That's $300 or more per MGC, so even the micro needs a real stop.

If you trade gold as XAUUSD on MetaTrader instead, the gold pip calculator does the same job in lots.

Turning ticks into a position size

risk per contract = stop in ticks × $1.00
contracts = your risk ÷ risk per contract

Work out the stop first, then the size. Never the other way round. The position size calculator does this for MGC and every other contract, and tells you when the micro fits better.

Knowing the tick value is the easy part. The part that costs traders money is what happens after two losers: an extra contract, a wider stop, one more trade. A max size rule you check after every session is what keeps the numbers on this page the numbers you actually trade.
