MES vs ES, and what to know
MES is the micro version of ES, one tenth of the size. Ten MES make the same per point as one ES.
Per point MES is $5 and MNQ is $2, but the S&P moves far fewer points a day than the Nasdaq. Compare the dollars per day on each, not the point value.
A 5 point stop on MES is $25 a contract, which makes it one of the easiest contracts to size precisely on a small account.
| Tick value | Per point | 5 point move | |
|---|---|---|---|
| MES | $1.25 | $5.00 | $25.00 |
| ES | $12.50 | $50.00 | $250.00 |
Turning ticks into a position size
contracts = your risk ÷ risk per contract
Work out the stop first, then the size. Never the other way round. The position size calculator does this for MES and every other contract, and tells you when the micro fits better.
Knowing the tick value is the easy part. The part that costs traders money is what happens after two losers: an extra contract, a wider stop, one more trade. A max size rule you check after every session is what keeps the numbers on this page the numbers you actually trade.
