GC vs MGC, and what to know

GC is the full-size gold future, 100 ounces. Every $1 move in gold is $100 a contract, and a tick of ten cents is $10.

A $5 stop in gold is $500 on one GC. If that's more than you risk per trade, MGC (Micro Gold) is the same chart at one tenth of the size: $1 a tick, $10 per $1 move.

GC is 100 ounces, the same as a standard lot of XAUUSD at most MetaTrader brokers, so a $1 move is worth $100 on both.

GC$10.00$100.00$500.00
MGC$1.00$10.00$50.00

Turning ticks into a position size

risk per contract = stop in ticks × $10.00
contracts = your risk ÷ risk per contract

Work out the stop first, then the size. Never the other way round. The position size calculator does this for GC and every other contract, and tells you when the micro fits better.

Knowing the tick value is the easy part. The part that costs traders money is what happens after two losers: an extra contract, a wider stop, one more trade. A max size rule you check after every session is what keeps the numbers on this page the numbers you actually trade.
