ES vs MES, and what to know

ES is the full-size E-mini S&P 500, the most traded equity index future. One point is $50, one tick $12.50.

A 5 point stop on ES is $250 a contract. If that's more than you risk per trade, trade MES: ten MES are one ES, so you can size in $25 steps instead of $250 ones.

Turning ticks into a position size

risk per contract = stop in ticks × $12.50
contracts = your risk ÷ risk per contract

Work out the stop first, then the size. Never the other way round. The position size calculator does this for ES and every other contract, and tells you when the micro fits better.

Knowing the tick value is the easy part. The part that costs traders money is what happens after two losers: an extra contract, a wider stop, one more trade. A max size rule you check after every session is what keeps the numbers on this page the numbers you actually trade.
