MNQ vs NQ, and what to know

MNQ is the micro version of NQ, exactly one tenth of the size. Ten MNQ make the same money per point as one NQ.

That's why MNQ is where most futures traders start. A 20 point stop is $40 a contract, not $400, so you can size properly on a small account and still trade the same chart as everyone else.

The catch: the Nasdaq moves a lot of points. A 300 point day is normal at today's prices, which is $600 per MNQ. Ten micros across a full day's range is $6,000.

Turning ticks into a position size

risk per contract = stop in ticks × $0.50
contracts = your risk ÷ risk per contract

Work out the stop first, then the size. Never the other way round. The position size calculator does this for MNQ and every other contract, and tells you when the micro fits better.

Knowing the tick value is the easy part. The part that costs traders money is what happens after two losers: an extra contract, a wider stop, one more trade. A max size rule you check after every session is what keeps the numbers on this page the numbers you actually trade.
