Rules

Risk rules: each rule, what counts as broken, and why stopping at a limit is kept

A risk rule is checked on every trade you import or add. The trade that crosses a limit is not the break; the trades you take after it are. Stop when the line is hit and the rule is kept, and the stats say so. Rules live in Settings > Risk rules, per account or for every account, and count from today unless you say otherwise.

What to do

  1. 1

Open Settings and click Risk rules.

  2. 2

Under "Add a rule" pick the kind, choose "Every account" or one account, and fill in the amount, count, size, minutes, window or symbols.

  3. 3

Amounts can be in R or $. For R, add an "R size" rule first: what one R is worth in dollars for that account.

  4. 4

Under "Counts from" leave "Today", or pick a date, or "All past trades too".

  5. 5

Click "Add rule". The list shows each rule with "kept every day" or "broken on N days", "limit hit N×, respected N×", and the net P&L of the breaking trades. "Pause" and "Delete" are the only edits.

Each rule and what breaks it

RuleSettingWhat counts as broken
Daily loss limitAmount in R or $Once the day's net P&L reaches this loss, every further trade that day. The trade that reached it is not a break.
Daily profit stopAmountOnce the day's net P&L reaches this profit, further trades.
Daily give-back limitAmountOnce the day has fallen this far below its own high, further trades.
Weekly loss limitAmountOnce the week's net P&L (Monday to Sunday) reaches this loss, every further trade that week.
Max trades per dayCountTrades beyond this count in one day, in entry order.
Max loss per tradeAmountAny single trade losing more than this. A loss of exactly the limit is allowed.
Max position sizeQuantityAny trade sized above this: contracts, lots or shares.
Stop after consecutive lossesCountAfter this many losses in a row, every further trade that day.
Cooldown after a lossMinutesA trade entered sooner than this after a losing exit. Flagged as a revenge trade.
Trading windowStart and end, HH:MMTrades entered outside the window, on the clock in your profile timezone. The window may wrap past midnight.
Allowed symbolsSymbol rootsTrades in any other symbol root.
R sizeDollarsNot a rule. What one R is worth for that account, so rules set in R can be converted.

Why stopping at a limit is kept

The rule is about what you did after the line, not about reaching it. Losing three trades to hit a 3R daily limit and closing the platform is the rule working. So for the limit rules, the trade that crosses the line is recorded as a hit, and the hit is "respected" when no trade was entered after it closed. Only trades entered after the crossing trade closed are breaks, and their net P&L is the cost. The Settings page says it the same way: "Stopping at a limit is a rule kept; the trades taken after a line is crossed are what break it."

Where breaks show

  • On the trade review, in a box "Rule break(s) on this trade", with a button to log the matching mistake in one click, for example "Log "Revenge trade" as a mistake".
  • On the calendar, a red ! on the day, and in the month tile's "Rule breaks" count. On the dashboard month strip too.
  • On Stats, the "Risk rules" card: "x of y trading days kept every rule", each rule with kept or broken days, hits and respected hits, and the cost. It is evaluated over every trade in the range, whatever filters are on.
  • In the weekly execution score, where "Rules kept" is one of the five parts.
  • On the group board as rule-break days per member. Rules that read P&L are skipped for members who hide dollars.
  • To friends who may see your plans and rules, as a notification "broke a rule", once per rule per day, never for breaks older than three days.

Details worth knowing

  • Days are your trading day, and a trade sits on the day it closed. The weekly limit uses Monday to Sunday.
  • "Counts from: Today" starts the rule on the current trading day, so an evening session is covered from tonight.
  • A rule set in R with no R size for that account shows a problem on the Settings page instead of being checked.
  • The cooldown rule needs the next trade to be entered after the losing one closed; overlapping trades are not revenge trades.
  • A break cannot be dismissed or overridden. You can pause the rule, delete it, or add it again with a later start date.
