The Stop and Risk columns, and how R is worked out

R is the trade's net P&L divided by its risk, to two decimals: a $200 win on $100 risk is +2R. The risk comes from your file's stop loss column, the risk box on the import preview, the Risk card on the trade page, or the Add trade form. Nothing is guessed. The Stop column works the stop back out of the saved risk.

Set the risk on trades you already have

  1. 1

Open the trade from the Trades page and find the Risk card.

  2. 2

Pick a unit: $, pts, ticks, pips, "stop price", or "loss = risk" on a losing trade that hit the stop you planned.

  3. 3

Type the number and click Save. The card shows "= $X on this size · Y R" and the R column fills in.

  4. 4

To see the Stop and Risk $ columns on the Trades page, click Columns and turn them on. They are hidden by default.

Where the risk comes from, in order

On the import preview the risk box is called "Risk (optional)". For each trade Actal takes the first of these that applies: a number you typed on the trade's row; the stop price the file states; an option's most it could lose, unless you untick the Options box; a loss counted as -1R when "My losing trades hit the stop I planned" is ticked; and otherwise the "Same risk on every trade" value in $, ticks, points or pips. The status line says "Risk set on N of M trades".

On a trade you already have, the Risk card on the trade page sets or replaces it. The Add trade form has a "Risk (optional)" field with the same units. There is no other edit form for a trade.

How R is computed

R = (gross P&L minus commission) divided by the risk, rounded to two decimals. It is kept fresh by the database: when a commission is applied later from Settings > Accounts, R updates with it. A trade with no risk shows a dash in the R column.

Ticks, points and pips are turned into dollars at the trade's own dollars per point, which is the trade's gross P&L over its price move, or the contract's point value times the size when the price did not move. A stop price is the distance from the entry, priced the same way. A stop on the wrong side of the entry is refused: "On a long, the stop goes below the entry".

The Stop column

Nothing stores a stop price. The Stop column on the Trades page works it out from the saved risk: the risk's distance from the entry at the trade's dollars per point, rounded to the contract's tick, below a long's entry or above a short's. A losing trade whose risk was saved as "loss = risk" shows its exit as the stop. Options and trades without a risk show nothing. The column header's tooltip says "Where the trade's risk puts its stop".

A stop loss column in your file

In the column mapper, the "Stop loss" field takes the price your stop was at and sets each trade's risk on import. On a fills file, put it on the row that opens the trade. A stop is kept only when it reads as one: on the losing side of the entry, within half the entry price, and never on options. The rest are left out with a note. On the preview the file's stop beats the risk rules, and a number typed on a row beats the file. See Using the column mapper for any CSV.

Where R shows

  • The R column on the Trades page, on by default, and the phone cards.
  • The "Risk and R" card on Stats once five or more trades carry a risk: total R, average R per trade, average winner and loser in R, average risk, how much the risk varies, and "N losses went past the stop and cost $X more than planned" for losses worse than -1.1R.
  • All stats > Risk and R: trades with a risk set, total R, average R as expectancy, best and worst R.
  • Ideas: average R per idea and R per trade.
  • Shared trades, group posts and public trade cards, where R is shown even when dollars are hidden.
